AISM Student Received as a LSU Family Practice Res
Dated: 09/29/2008
Dr. David Persaud is one of four residents currently training in the LSU Family Practice Residency Program in Bogalusa. The Residents have completed medical school and will train for three years in all phases of medicine to equip them as specialists in family medicine. Dr. David Persaud age 23 years was born in upstate New York but was raised in one of the loveliest places in the world- Guyana, South America. He described Guyana as a multi-cultural melting pot with people from many nationalities. Dr. Persaud’s parents grew up in Guyana and his father was a physician for a sugar plantation. Since his father was a Doctor, he grew up around the practice of medicine and from a young age wanted to be a Doctor. He gained his formal education at Queens College, in Guyana, and in January 2001 was enlisted in the American International School of Medicine’s 4th batch of students, with the first two years of Medical School in Guyana and the third and fourth years in Atlanta. While in Medical School, Dr. Persaud found himself interested in “ a little bit of everything” and when it came down to choosing a specialty, he decided the practice of family medicine fit his varied interests perfectly. “I was looking for a specialty that would give me long term follow-up with patients and allow me to establish relationships with their families,” he said. Dr. David Persaud first heard of the program from the dean of his medical school, then sent in an application and called for an interview. He came into the program in April 2007, and has been busy adjusting to life in Bogalusa. “Atlanta was an excellent experience,” he said, “But I knew this was where I wanted to come. The people are friendly and welcoming and take more time to say hello. The pace of life is different.” For the month of May, he did a community medicine rotation In June he was in Lafayette in an ob/gyn rotation and said he is “anxiously ready” to be able to deliver babies in Bogalusa. July saw him in the local emergency room for ER rotation followed by internal medicine in August and pediatrics in September. Dr. Persaud opined “we are being exposed to a lot and we can do a lot of interventions,” they are also doing physicals for high school football players. He said the LSU Clinic on avenue F is the cornerstone of residency program. Everything revolves around the clinic, where they see patients and coordinate all activities. The residents are kept with the patients and follow the progress of their care. There are four residents and four clinical faculty members – a total of eight physicians in the program right now. There is also much interest in medical students. Third and fourth year LSU medical students also come to study at the clinic. “It is a well coordinated organization, a great academic environment and great interest in patient care,” Persaud said. “ I estimate that it is the best clinic training in the country. It is an honor to work with Dr. LaRqavia and the other instructors. We have an excellent interaction with the teachers and mentors, who are always wanting to impart knowledge.” The LSU family residency is a three-year program, with plans for four new residents to be added each year. Making reference to his family he said “We are very family – oriented and also very church oriented. There was also a great emphasis on education. The schools in Guyana are very good.” So far Dr. Persaud has joined the Bogalusa Rotary Club, was involved in a recent health fair and has attended Bible Study with Dr. Dennis LaRavia. Persaud said he is open to settleing permanently in Louisiana. “I like the south,” he said with a big smile.
